BASIC RULES

So, Why do I have to tube may amp?

Well, the first and most obvious reason is "Hey, this thing does not work anymore!" But in reality the sound is the best way to tell (I know this is a hard thing to say, but it is your amp and you should know how it sounds). An amp needs to be tubed when the sound gets "muddy," lacks punch, or it just does not sound right.

As a very basic rule, you should put power tubes in your amp once a year, under normal musician circumstances (Let's say you rehearse 3 times a week 3 hours a night and you gig 2 or 3 times a week).

Preamp tubes or the "small tubes" should be changed twice as often as power tubes. You see preamp tubes are where most of gain and distortion come from in your amp, so they lend a lot to the amplifier's tone. They also work twice as hard. Remember these are basic rules, all amps are different, some amps (Boogies, ADA MP1, Laney, and all other very high gain amps) may work preamp tubes harder than others. These amps will burn up preamp tubes faster than your clean Fender amp.

Do I have to have my amp "biased"?

Well, this is a trick question. A question asked by every musician bringing his amp to the tech or music store. I look at it like this, it is true that all amps do not need to be "biased" but .....Let's say you go to your favorite music store to buy tubes, and you walk in and say "Dude I need some tubes!" Believe me they are going to sell them to you. Now you get home, with your $60.00 to $100.00 investment in tubes. You pop them in your amp and you begin to play full volume. Suddenly you stop playing and you notice that your amp is humming. You look at your $60.00 to $100.00 investment and they are glowing a lovely shade of RED. We have just ruined our $60.00 to $100.00 investment. The moral of the story is, all amps do not need to be tubed but ALL amps should see a qualified tech every time power tubes are replaced.

Believe me it is worth the $30.00 or $40.00 bench charge to keep your amp in top shape. One thing I forgot to is mention the small tube closest to the power tubes also needs replacing with every set of power tubes. It is the phase inverter tube and they all need to be replaced at the same time. PERIOD.

The key to keeping your equipment in great playing shape is knowing how to take care of it properly. The day to day grind on any guitar or amp causes small problems, that if not taken care of can lead to big ones.
